General map

This is an account of a holiday my father, Howard Boys, took me on in 1939, the record is fairly precise and is indicative of the man. The map above shows the roads currently present, back in 1939 roadways were much simpler. Coventry, the start is clearly visible just to the left of centre at the top.

Saturday

Left Coventry about 11 a.m. & called at Rugby for insurance policy. Bought petrol on the way, 2/2. Had trouble with sparks dept & had dinner just before Southam. Called on J C Gardner at Banbury & bought meths. 4d. Had to stop just outside Adderbury to clean carburetta & Jim enjoyed himself watching some hens. Went on fine after that & reached a scout camp at Milton, just off the Newbury road. Had tomatoes and cheese for supper & Jim had milk. Got Jim to bed about 7-30 or 8 pm but he would not go to sleep until I went about 10 but he then slept through til 6-30 am. I slept from 10 to nearly 4 am. Address of Scouter met at Milton - Mr. J H Thew, 58 Welham Rd., SW17

Milton, our first stop is a small village south of Oxford and Abingdon, clearly visible above.
