Sway to Lulworth

Monday

Woke while it was still dark but waited until Jim woke at 7-30 before I got up. Got cups of cocoa & shaved then washed in stream. Found a little water wheel revolving & Jim was very interested, he paddled in his "Wellingtons" & got water over the top. Jim wanted biscuits for breakfast & I had orange & bread & butter as the stove had run out of paraffin. Heated the water for cocoa & shave on the meths heater. Lots of horses came by much to Jim's delight. Packed up & got started by 11 & called for milk 3 1/2d. While I was talking to the woman, her grandma took Jim some Mickey Mouse comics. After travelling nearly to Christchurch I found the throttle wire needed repairing & managed to get more paraffin & meths when I got petrol 2/8. Thought I would stop at first convenient spot to have dinner & do repairs but got to Branksome Chine first. Jim went to sleep as we rode through Bournemouth & slept for nearly an hour after we got to Branksome Chine.

When he woke up I pointed out the sea to him & while I was getting dinner he excitedly shouted out "Boat" & pointed to a paddle steamer going to Bournemouth. We had soup for dinner, Jim finishing with bananas & I had apple & bread & butter. That done I soldered up the throttle wire paid for car park 6d & went to build castles. Jim was too busy looking round at first but soon found he could dig in the sand. I helped build a little castle with a moat & we fetched a bucket of water & tipped it in. Jim was very puzzled at first by the waves washing up because he so soon found himself in deep water but he was alright again when the wave went back & seemed to think it had just done it so that we could fill the bucket. I took a few photographs of him and while I was looking for more poses, a baby girl of about 10 months came crawling along the sand, obviously after Jim's bucket. It was too good a chance to miss photographing so I let rip. When Jim found her he put his arms round her neck and quite hung on. So much so that I had to break him away to prevent him hurting. This little girl very interesting & I took quite a lot of snaps. A little later her mother fetched her & I heard her remark to someone that she was no good at photography so I plucked up courage & suggested that I took her address & sent on my results (Mrs Cadden, 117 Tamworth Rd., Sutton Coldfield).

She had previously asked me if Jim was my little boy & was most interested in the photographs of Jim & Michael & wished she had a set like them of Patricia. Soon after that we bought bananas 6d & made off through Canford Cliffs village, by Sandbanks & into Poole passing a lot of boats that Jim climbed up in the car to see. I got a small loaf somewhere round that way 3d & Jim soon fell asleep in the car so I thought I would try to get some distance before stopping for camp. We passed through Wareham & turned for Lulworth & eventually found a farm nearly in East Lulworth where I got milk 3d. Jim again would not go to sleep till 9-30 & I turned in soon after.

Lulworth

Quite prominent on this aerial picture is the army camp at Lulworth but also shown is a typical section of England's beautiful south coast.
